Africa, african continent,
About fifteen years ago, I decided to travel to Burkina Faso for the first time. I along with the person who was my wife at the time, both already knew a bit Africa. Me, because of my father being African and for having lived in DR Congo for a few years when I was a child, and my wife through her parents’ strong ties with Africa (her sister was born there). So we went there to see how other countries fared compared to what we had already visited in the past.
As we came out of the plane at Ougadougou airport, I knew I was in Africa. The smell, the aromas, the heat, and the general natural mystic that floats through the air, as our dear Bob Marley would say. Immediately I felt at home. I tend to see more Africa as one big country, rather than a bunch of different countries. I don’t know there is something about Africa and Africans that cannot be taken away, even abroad. And that is their sense of feeling African, black, more than a specific nationality. And this spirit of oneness is something I found deeply rooted in Burkina Faso.
While I was there, I embarked on a journey of self searching (you cannot avoid that once in Africa). One start to view life differently, once in Africa. Some values that have been lost in the west but which make a human are very well rooted in Burkina Faso. Values such as family ones, friendship, brotherhood, non-materialism, happiness in life, politeness, respect and helpfulness thrive in that country and make the people of Burkina Faso one of the most beautiful people I have ever had the chance to come across.
Add to that the beauty of the country, the variety in scenery, and its great culinary culture, and Burkina Faso becomes the perfect destination for a humbling holiday in the extremely hot sun. Not only that there are so many wonders to visit throughout the country, and being surrounded by 6 different countries, I would take the time to visit at least one or two countries on the other side of the border.
